More Cooing and a Little Less Boo-ing

1:31 PM

The smelling salts must have worked. Independent magazines and left-leaning publications are switching from the "What the @!!?!" to "Bring it on, Mofo," way of thinking. That's encouraging because for a while the distant gazes in the eyes of my peers was beginning to unnerve me. Sure there are a few stragglers still clutching their depression with both hands will trying to fill out Canadian immigration forms, but by and large the youth voters and progressives have realized a few things:

  1. We lost the battle, not the war; it ain't over till it's over.
  2. If Kerry had won, like it or not, he would have been the dart-board to GOP darts and he would have enjoyed nothing but abuse from GOP controlled House, and Senate.
  3. Kerry would have to save Iraq and undo all of Bush's mess, and resuscitate the economy in two years otherwise it would be GOP in the White House until your grandkids croak.
  4. The next four years are going to be a sh**storm for Bush as he tries to keep his right wing brethren on his side as he moves to the center to get things done; watch Arlen Specter go from zero to hero in the next two years.

Progressives have also realized something more important: All the urban areas with the greatest amount of resources and reach continued to vote blue. We have the money, population and power to turn things around. The red States have Wal-Mart. Yum. In about four years, they will still have Wal-Mart. When things don't change around them, it will change in the White House.

This excellent article from The Village Voice nails it.

The level of mobilization achieved by independent groups was phenomenal and bodes well for the American democracy in years to come. It's a blessing in disguise because these huge numbers of young and committed voters are blatantly progressive supporting gay-marriage, reproductive rights, the Constitution among other things.

So, I'll let you read that piece and make this the last post of encouragement for now as well as put a lid on the anti-Christian Right banter. I've said my piece on that matter, and there's no point in getting bitter eh?
